Named for my family's Indigenous American lineage, the Saura/Cheraw Nation of the Carolinas. I wanted to highlight this nation as one of many Southeastern American Indigenous Tribes. One of the origin stories of the Saura nation is that a shipwreck occurred on the coastal Carolina waters in the 1300s. The ship was said to have been an earlier pre-Columbian expedition of African traders and explorers who disembarked Africa's west coast. The survivors of the shipwreck were integrated into the Catawba nations, and allotted their own land settlement to form what would eventually blossom into the Saura nation. Whether they were part of the great Malian King, Abu Bakari's fleet of 400 ships; or independent explorers from the Senegambia remains to be proven. The Africans who arrived later during the African Holocaust, were also integrated largely into the Saura nation. In the Carolina census records many Saura/Cheraw natives are listed as mulatto or negro.
